Monica Willson, MS, LMFT
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). You may have heard it said before that the quality of our life is determined by the quality of our relationships. As an LMFT, my training prioritizes relationships as paramount to mental health. The tasks of exploring, bringing healing, and shifting systemic relational patterns shape the goals and process of this kind of therapeutic work.
Whether you are entering my office as an individual, couple, or family, I can help you grow a better quality relationship with yourself and the people most important to you.
I am committed to therapeutic work that is holistic, culturally sensitive, and client-centered. I am an ally to the LGBTQ+ community. I work from a trauma-informed perspective that draws from Attachment Theory, Mindfulness practices, Body-Centered approaches, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
As an IFS therapist, I regularly witness people learning to engage their inner lives and relationships with their own inherent and powerful resources—resources they weren’t even sure existed before we began our work together. When supportive connection and therapeutic skills are in place resources like clarity, compassion, curiosity, and creativity emerge and become available to meet the distressed, exhausted, ruminating, addicted, and overwhelmed parts of us that need our attention.
- Complex Trauma
- Eating Disorders (Binge Eating, Bulimia, Anorexia, Other Specified Feeding/Eating Disorders)
- Body Image Concerns
I’ve been privileged to work extensively with teens and adults struggling with eating disorders. I am passionate about working with any type of eating that feels stressful, confusing, exhausting, obsessive, disconnected, or just taking up too much space in your daily life. I work from an approach that supports Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size (HAES). These perspectives promote a consistently honoring and compassionate view of the body for individuals of every size.
I’m a good person to talk with if you’ve come to a place where you just want to feel normal around food, be more at home in your body, less preoccupied with negative body image and more present to your life.
I was born and raised in Southern, CA. My husband and I moved to Grand Rapids in 2015. I hold a B.S. in Human Services from Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, CA and an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. I have been in practice since 2012.
I consider it a high honor to be in this work with you. It never ceases to amaze me what can happen when we learn to practice paying attention and honor our unique and yet universal human experiences. Healing happens. Movement happens. Things change. Transformation is possible.
