DeWanda Gichemi (LMSW) earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia and her Master of Social Work Degree from Grand Valley State University. In 1996-97, DeWanda actively participated as a Team Lead/Field Coordinator for the Grand Rapids Service Corps-Michigan’s AmeriCorps Program. While serving in AmeriCorps, time was dedicated to community rebuilding via Habitat for Humanity, neighborhood rebeautification, and educational excellence by implementing tutorial programs for disadvantaged youths within the Grand Rapids community. As a strong advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and education locally and abroad, she provided HIV/AIDS case management services in Durban, South Africa to South African women and their children affected by HIV/AIDS in 1999.
DeWanda has practiced in the field of Social Work since 1991. She has worked with culturally diverse populations of adults, adolescents, children, infants, couples, and families in jail, residential, home-based, group, and outpatient settings. DeWanda has specialized in Infant Mental Health since 2004 which focused on the parent-infant/child attachment relationship. She has also specialized working with women challenged by Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Anxiety.
DeWanda is a very exceptional, compassionate, and empathetic clinician whom values the work she does by providing individual, family, and couples/marital therapy. Although, she has valuable experience and expertise with various mental health disorders; Perinatal Mood Disorders, Mood Disorders (Depression), Anxiety/Panic Disorders, Family/Relationship Dynamics, PTSD/Stress Management, Life Skills Coaching, and Infant Mental Health are her specialties.
